  このホテル、Garden Hotel Suzhouを選んだのは、古風な庭園の魅力に惹かれたからでした。しかし、2泊してみると、東屋や水辺のテラスに囲まれたレクリエーション施設に、思いがけず心を奪われました。庭園から一歩も出ることなく、休暇ならではのリラックスした雰囲気に浸ることができたのです。
  朝6時半、クスノキの並木道を歩いてレクリエーションセンターへ向かいました。蓮池にはまだ朝霧が立ち込め、朝の運動をする宿泊客は、中庭の静寂を乱さないようにそっと歩いていました。レクリエーションセンターは、庭園の奥深くにある静かな建物の中にあります。中に入ると、一般的なジムのような窮屈さは全くありませんでした。床から天井まで続く大きな窓からは、小さな竹林が見渡せました。朝のそよ風に揺れる竹の葉の音と遠くから聞こえる鳥のさえずりは、ジムのけたたましい音楽よりもずっと心地よかった。
  24時間営業のフィットネスエリアには、筋力トレーニングエリアのダンベルセットから有酸素運動エリアのトレッドミルやエリプティカルマシンまで、輸入されたプロ仕様の機器が揃っている。どのマシンも丁寧にメンテナンスされ、完璧に動作する。最も心遣いが感じられるのは、各トレッドミルの前に用意された小さなタオルと無料の電解質飲料水だ。30分ほど走っていると、窓の外に揺れる竹の影が目に飛び込んできて、運動が本当に楽しい体験となり、ジム通いの退屈さを完全に払拭してくれる。
  一番驚いたのは、屋内温水プールだ。水温は年間を通して約28℃に保たれているので、初秋の肌寒い時期でも全く冷たく感じない。プールの片側には大きな展望窓があり、折り返し地点から見上げると、太湖の石やバナナの木々が外に見え、まるで庭園の東屋で泳いでいるような気分になります。プールサイドの休憩エリアでは、無料のジンジャーティーが提供されています。数周泳いだ後、一杯飲むと全身が温まり、日中の観光で疲れた筋肉痛もほとんど和らぎます。
